Retention Resources for Individuals & Educational Institutions

Strategies for Publishing Your Work in a Scholarly Journal

Submitting your work to be considered for publication in a refereed journal can be exhilarating. It can also be frustrating. Many educators find it challenging to research, write, and submit a polished manuscript to a refereed journal. This is especially true for those who are new to the profession or who are on the tenure track and must demonstrate their ability to conduct research and have it distributed through scholarly publications.

I’m the founding editor of the Journal of College Student Retention: Research, Theory & Practice, a scholarly, refereed SAGE publication in its 24th year. I know what editors and reviewers are looking for in a manuscript submitted for publication. That is why I developed this course—to give you confidence and help ensure that your manuscript will receive the utmost consideration. After taking this course, I hope you will agree that you are more prepared to submit your manuscript to a refereed journal. The cost of the course is $40.

Giving Compelling Presentations of Your Research

Many educators find it difficult to adapt their research into a presentation. This is especially true for those who are new to the profession, who are on the tenure track, and must demonstrate their ability to conduct research and disseminate it, not only through scholarly publications but by presentations at local, state, national, and international conferences. Even those who have given presentations previously can find the process challenging especially if an earlier presentation did not go as well as expected.

This “how to” course will provide you with tools and best practices for developing a compelling presentation. It will give you a boost on the process from the selection of appropriate conferences and venues, to helping you overcome the fear of speaking in front of small or large groups. At the conclusion of this course, you should feel comfortable selecting appropriate conferences for your presentation and, once accepted, developing a blueprint for the presentation and having confidence that your presentation will have a positive impact on the audience. The cost of the course is $40.
