Student Retention and Persistence to Graduation: Effects of an Introductory Life Calling Course

Shanna L. Conner, Douglas Daugherty, Megan N Gilmore

Abstract

The researchers examine the effect of a course, Introduction to Life Calling (LDR150), on retention and persistence to graduation at a private, Midwestern university. The subjects consist of 1891 students who entered the university between fall 2001 and spring 2004, including 350 course participants who compose the experimental group. The researchers found the relationship between course participation and graduating status to be statistically significant (p > .05) but not as significant as characteristic predictors of academic success, such as ACT or SAT scores (p > .01).  This study suggests that a well-rounded course such as LDR150 can have a positive impact on retention and can be a valuable asset for the students and university alike.
